Domain registration made simple
When you want to get a domain name for a new hobby site or online business, or for the sake of owning your name as a dot com, the steps are very straightforward. Right at the start, select the name you want. Many of the domain registration services, like Godaddy, offer various tools which will help you. You type in any domain, and they will reveal if the domain name is owned by someone or not. If it is still free, you can register it. If it is already registered by another person, then the internet registration service will offer you varieties of the name to consider, or you could think about using other suffixes, such as .net, .info or .biz. While .com domain names are still the most familiar and most common, the amount of traffic you will get to your new internet domain will be due to your optimization and promotion work and will have little to do with the domain extension, so don’t be to upset if you don’t get the .com version of the domain you wanted.
Assuming you have found the name you love, and it is not already registered by somebody else, how do you proceed?
Using a service like Godaddy, and having performed the search for your name and confirmed that it is free, you will then click on a ‘Proceed to Checkout’ button or similar.
You must select the length of time you want to register for - from 1 to ten years. If you have long term plans for the domain name, or want it as an possible investment, go for a higher figure. If the domain name is just for resale, choose a shorter period.
Next, you have to enter your name and email contact details. When you own a company, you will also insert the company name. These details is used for the registration of the domain - the name is recorded as legally belonging to you, for the time period you have registered it for. In technical terms, you become the ‘registrant’ of the name, and no-one else can have it.
For the next step, you should choose whether your registration is to be ‘private’ or ‘public’. A public registration means that any individual using the Whois lookup service has the ability to investigate the domain name and see your name and details. Depending on the nature of the site you are going to make, you may think paying the small additional charge for a protected registration which restricts viewing of your details will be worth it to avoid spam or crank messages.
Having made your selection, you can give your credit card or Paypal details, make the payment, and the domain becomes yours, for the period you have selected. A good registrar like Godaddy will inform you, using the email address you registered with, when the time arrives to update or renew registration of the domain.
It is just as easy as that to register a domain!
