Off-Page Optimization Versus On-Page Optimization

There is some debate between web designers and search engine optimization specialist about the relevance of on page optimization versus off page optimization when looking for organic search traffic. Although on- page optimization is certainly necessary for letting the search engines know what subject your website is about, this is where on page optimization ends. Explanation is certainly deserved for making such a bold statement.

On page optimization consist of content relevant to the general theme of the website and proper keywords should be used in the meta tags to help the web crawlers in identifying and understanding what the website is about. If you are using Adsense to monetize your website, proper meta tags and relevant content will certainly be needed to insure that Adsense places the correct ads on your site for your targeted audience.

However, no amount of meta tag stuffing or keyword stuffing will help you gain targeted organic traffic without off-page optimization, especially in a competitive niche. Off page optimization in the form of back links with properly worded anchor text is the best method for gaining organic search traffic. Think of back links as a popularity contest with the website acquiring the most votes gaining the top position in the search engines. Although all back links are not created equal.

Just as all shares in public companies are not created equal, neither are back links. Preferred stockholders have more voting power than common stockholders therefore carrying more weight when voting on company business. Back links from websites to your site that are relevant to your niche will carry far more weight than a back link from a non-relevant website that is in a completely different niche. Relevant back links carry more weight and are the better link to acquire for off-page optimization purposes. This does not mean however, that you should not acquire back links that are not relevant to your website.

You cannot control who decides to link their site to yours and the search engine algorithm understands this and still counts the non-relevant back link as a vote, carrying less weight, but nevertheless counts. This is the natural way websites gain back links, both relevant and non-relevant.

Back linking is so powerful that it is possible to gain keyword authority in a niche in which your website is not relevant. Using anchor text, you can outrank other websites in a completely different niche and in some cases take the number one position if it is a non-competitive niche. It is not recommended to do this since Google or the other search engines may ban your site from the non-relevant niche or altogether if someone complains.

Off-page optimization is far more important than on-page optimization for gaining organic search traffic. Both are necessary however, since off-page optimization will bring traffic to your website, on-page optimization will provide the content that the traffic will read once they get to your website and hopefully convert into money through your monetization method. Off-page optimization wins hands down for purposes of gaining organic search traffic.
